Dla Ludzi Mobile Gallery
Dla Ludzi means "of the people" in Polish. I chose this title being Polish and found it fitting to call this intimate gallery. It's like the size of a trick box used in a magic act. It fits only one person at a time and has only three walls (middle wall 25.5 inches wide and the side walls 20.5 inches wide). I made the gallery in December of 2016 and began curating shows in it February 2017. I primarily keep it on CSULB campus but it is mobile and can be presented anywhere. Here are the shows that have been displayed in the Dla Ludzi thus far. If interested in presenting or collaborating with the Dla Ludzi contact me via my information on the contact tab.
Below is a podcast and script of the project:
Hello. my name is Katia Swihart and I am the creator, owner, and curator of Dla Ludzi, The Mobile Gallery. This gallery was made for students and young artists so they could show their work without the pressures of a traditional gallery institution. It started off as a final for a final in an intro sculpture class that turned into a residing public project here at CSULB. The gallery is the size of a telephone booth, having an interior of 20.5 inches by 25.5 inches, meaning it can only fit one person at a time. The gallery normally resides inside of the hallways of FA4 where almost every week i have artists who reach out to me to be in it. I do the installing myself, as well as the retouching of the walls, the curating, and the writing of the artists statements that describes the artwork and I propose a name for the tiny exhibition every week. I would not have had the fun of this ongoing operation if it wasn't for my professors' encouragement and COTA's "Laiz Faire" permission. I do not exclude anyone from presenting in my gallery. I just require that I pick out the artwork and that we work together to say what we want to say to the public about it. I hope to see the Dla Ludzi to function outside of the institution it is currently in and function as little as an institution as possible.
